Scope Summary:

The Development Manager is a key player on CompTIA Spark's fundraising team, working to enhance the productivity and effectiveness of our major gift fundraising program. Reporting to the director of development, the development manager is responsible for managing and optimizing organizational development processes to increase fundraising revenue, including conducting prospect research to build and maintain a pipeline, overseeing stewardship and recognition programs, ensuring appropriate usage of the development donor database, overseeing reporting and acknowledgment needs and maintaining departmental records. The development manager will also support our grant writing and donor outreach work, document key procedures, maintain the department's grants calendar, and collaborate with a contract grant writer to ensure grant deadlines are met.

Success in this role will require excellent organizational skills, knowledge of the development process and the operational components that make it function, and a willingness to be entrepreneurial and try new approaches to solving challenges.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees systems for prospecting, research, and pipeline development.
  • Maintains tracking for proposals, reports, and supplementary materials to ensure that necessary internal and external funding deadlines are met.
  • Supports the grant writing/ proposal creation and submission process. Supports and conducts outreach to potential donors on behalf of the organization.
  • Creates and tailors financial reports as required by funders.
  • Conducts high-quality prospect and donor research to support major gift strategies and solicitations; provides briefings and background reports as needed; assesses philanthropic interests, giving capacity, propensity, and readiness.
  • Operates the organization's donor stewardship program, including managing the donor acknowledgment process.
  • Ensures effective tracking of proposals, goals, and fundraising progress/ pipeline metrics.
  • Oversees management of donor database (Microsoft Dynamics) from a development team perspective. Ensures data integrity and accuracy within the donor database.
  • Enters and updates biographical information in donor database. Assists in data verification and quality control. Maintains comprehensive files on donors, prospects, and fundraising projects.
  • Manages and updates charity watchdog sites (GuideStar, Charity Navigator, etc) to support major gift fundraising.
  • Manages a portfolio of workplace-giving donors and prospects.
  • Stays informed about fundraising trends and best practices.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 3-5 years experience in non-profit development
  • General knowledge of philanthropy and a desire to have an impact on a mission-driven organization
  • Knowledge of general principles of major gift fundraising
  • Strong understanding of fundraising strategies and donor management systems
  • Excellent analytical and data management skills
  • Adaptability; able to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines
  • Team player; able to collaborate and share ideas and take up responsibilities to support others
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while keeping long term objectives in mind
  • Experience managing data within CRM software, Microsoft Dynamics a plus
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail
